The Brewster Schools

The communities known as Doansburg, Milltown, DeForest Corners, Drewville, Dean’s Corners, Brush Hollow, Sodom, Dykeman’s, Barnum’s Corners and Elm Tree all had their own schoolhouses.  Slowly the one-room schoolhouses closed and their pupils joined the Brewster schools. Centralization of the Brewster School District was finished in 1946.

In 1895, a framed school was built where the present day Garden Street Elementary School stands today. Eight teachers taught first grade through high school to 334 students.

A fire destroyed the school in 1923.  In 1927 the brick Garden Street opened its doors for 600 students and 30 teachers.  The last high school senior class to graduate from Garden Street was in 1959.

The St. Lawrence O’Toole School opened in 1931. The Melrose School on Federal Hill Road opened in 1963.
