Toys
The turn of the twentieth century saw a dramatic change in children’s toys. The majority of toys
prior to the 20th century were made from wood, leather and cast iron. Cheap tin toys flooded the toy market in the early 1900’s. These tin-plated toys were fitted with clockwork mechanisms letting the toys
move on their own. Today we call these clockwork toys wind-up toys. Many tin toys were produced in Connecticut, which had a large tin and clock industry. Film and cartoon characters such as Mickey Mouse,
Felix the Cat and Dumbo were made into tin toys.
