2008 Adult Humanity Lectures 

Tragedy of the Radium Dial Painters: A National Health Story

On Sunday, April 27 at 2PM

The Southeast Museum will host a lecture by Dr. Eugene J. Boesch from Mahopac. The lecture is a discuss about women who were radium dial painters at the historic U.S. Radium site in New Jersey 90 years ago were exposed to radiation and many subsequently died. From that tragedy, one of the first officially recognized cases of industrial poisoning emerged worker health standards, scientific investigation of radiation induced sickness, and data on radiation exposure limits for humans used by the World War II Manhattan Project.

This program is Free and open to the public.  It is supported in part by the New York Council for the Humanities.

Presidential Powers

On Sunday, June 1 at 2PM

The Southeast Museum will host a lecture by Dr. Frank M. Sorrentino, Professor of Political Science at St. Francis College. The Lecture will explore presidential power and how it has evolved from its origins to the present. Is it sufficient to protect the nation in an age of terrorism, or is it a threat to the constitutional framework and American liberty?

This program is Free and open to the public.  It is supported in part by the New York Council for the Humanities.

WOODEN TOY CHILDREN’S WORKSHOP

On Saturday, May 10th at 10:30AM  

Have fun making old-fashioned toys.  Working with wood glue and paint, learn to make simple toys that children played with long ago.  Come a play with museum’s replicas of antique wooden toys was well as seeing the museum’s collection of historic toys.

A CHILDREN’S THEATER WORKSHOP

On Saturday, May 17, 2007 at 2-4PM

The Southeast Museum & The Brewster Theater Co. will present a Children’s Theater Workshop.  The workshop’s participants will bring a popular story, Little Pea to life through warm-ups and theater games, making props/costumes and ‘performing’ the story.  The cost for each workshop is $10.

DOLL MAKING CHILDREN’S WORKSHOP

On Saturday, May 31 at 10:30AM

Cloth dolls forever hold a strong affection in our hearts and minds having been created & recreated many times over the centuries.  Children will enjoy working with needle and thread to sew a cloth doll.  Learn to design, cut and sew an old fashion doll and finish it with yarn hair and button eyes. 

FELT SEWING CHILDREN’S WORKSHOP

On Saturday, May 31st at 10:30AM 

Felt is the oldest form of cloth known to humankind. It is a wonderful material to use to introduce children to sewing. Enjoy making felt bookmarks and banners with a spring theme.

GLASS PAINTING CHILDREN’S WORKSHOP

On Saturday, June 14th at 10:30AM

Reverse glass painting was popular in America during the early 1800’s found mostly on clocks and mirrors.  The artist painted the design on one side of the glass and viewed it on the other side.  Join us to learn how to make you own framed painted glass. 

A CHILDREN’S THEATER WORKSHOP

On Saturday, June 21, 2007 at 2-4PM

The Southeast Museum & The Brewster Theater Co. will present a Children’s Theater Workshop.  The workshop’s participants will bring a popular story, Three Billy Goats Gruff, to life through warm-ups and theater games, making props/costumes and ‘performing’ the story.  The cost for each workshop is $ 10.

TIE DYING CHILDREN’S WORKSHOP

On Saturday, August 9th at 10:30AM

Bring your own t-shirt, socks, or other white item to dye and explore the traditional methods of dying wool and cloth used in days gone by. We’ll use turmeric, onion skins, grape juice and beet juice to produce a wide variety of natural colors.

PAPER MAKING CHILDREN’S WORKSHOP

On Saturday, July 26th at 10:30AM

The Chinese invented paper in 105 A.D. Paper has been made of pulped cellulose fibers like wood, cotton or flax over the years. Discover the art and craft of papermaking using natural fibers and recycled goods to produce handmade paper.  

FLOWER POUNDING CHILDREN’S WORKSHOP

On Saturday, August 9th at 10:30AM

Flower Pounding will have you looking at fresh flowers in a whole new way. See what colors emerge as you hammer flowers into fabric! Learn to make a work of art using fresh flowers and a clever fabric technique.  

CHILDREN’S LEATHER WORKSHOP

On Saturday, August 23rd at 10:30AM

Leather hides and skins of animals were widely used by the colonist for clothing, bags and other necessities.  Discover the fun of leather crafting and learn carving, punching and finishing technique.

CHILDREN’S EXPLORE THE MUSEUM WORKSHOP

On Saturday, September 20 at 10:30AM

Explore the Museum as you never have before! Objects teach about the past. In this workshop unusual objects are studied to determine their value to the people who used them.  Participants will deduce their use and purpose from the clues these objects contain. 

CHILDREN’S RECYCLED MATERIALS ART WORKSHOP

On Saturday, September 27th at 10:30AM

Using a range of materials from colored paper to acetate sheets, ribbon and fabric to create a unique piece of art. All material is donated by local businesses who would otherwise throw away all their redundant stock. 

CHILDREN’S CORN HUSK DOLL AND WORRIOR WORKSHOP

On Saturday, October 11th at 10:30AM 

Where ever corn was grown as crop, children used husk to fashion dolls.  Join us and make your very own corn his doll or warrior.

CHILDREN’S SPOOKY SPIDER WORKSHOP

On Saturday, October 18th at 10:30AM

Fill a glove with beans to make a floppy spooky Halloween spider.

CHILDREN’S ROCKS AND MINERALS WORKSHOP

On Saturday, November 1 at 10:30AM

Learn about rocks and minerals from the Brewster/Southeast area especially magnetite which was mined at the Tilly Foster Mine.  Through hands-on activities participants will investigate and test magnets, to understand their behavior, properties, and applications in today’s world. 

CHILDREN’S HOLIDAY ORNAMENT WORKSHOP

On Saturday, December 6th at 4:30PM

There is something very special about a Christmas ornament that has been hand-made by a child. Before the lighting festival on Main Street, children can join us to create a unique holiday ornament.

PRE-NEW YEARS PARTY FOR CHILDREN     

On Saturday, December 30 at 1:30PM

Join us at the museum to celebrate the coming of the New Year.  Children can make a bright star to wish upon and enjoy juice and holiday cookies.
